"Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine, and earthquake cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think these calamities will not happen, that they somehow will be set aside because of the righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue that day they harbored such a delusion". --- Pres. Ezra Taft Benson, Prepare for the Days of Tribulation

Three Hundred Volunteers are needed for this cycling event.   The volunteers will be course
marshalls in driveways to keep other people off the course.  The attachment tells you all about the tour and the route it will take.

Please send this out throughout the neighborhoods to search out volunteers.  If you know of a ward or church or other group that is looking for a service project, this would be a great one. The attachment tells you who to contact.

Thank you so much for your help.  The opening meeting is Wednesday, so this needs to go out RIGHT AWAY.  A BIG THANK YOU AND HAVE A GREAT 24TH.

Subject: Invitation to Health Fair- Provost South
Dear David Knecht,
Mountainlands Community Health Center is putting on a health fair for the neighborhood on the evening of August 24th. Mountainlands is a not for profit organization that provides a pharmacy and medical, dental, and mental health services in one convenient location. We serve those in need regardless of their ability to pay or their insurance status. We accept medicare, medicaid, SCHIP, many other insurances, and those without insurance as well.

We are hosting this health fair to introduce Mountainlands to the community and to show what other services are available to them. This fair will be held at our Provo location and we hope to have booths
performing health checks, a rock climbing wall, helmet safety, a Zumba demonstration, and more. Are there any specific needs in your neighborhood that we can address at this health fair?

Feed Others'

"Let us be in a position so we are able to not only feed ourselves through the home production and storage, but others as well."   - Pres. Benson

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Underlying Principle of Church Welfare

“Unfortunately, there has been fostered in the minds of some an expectation that when we experience hard times, when we have been unwise and extravagant with our resources and have lived beyond our means, we should look to either the Church of government to bail us out.  Forgotten by some of our members is an underlying principle of the Church welfare plan that “no true Latter-day Saint will, while physically able, voluntarily shift from himself the burden of his own support”.   - Pres. Benson and Marion G. Romney -1980

Strong HOMES; Spirtual and Temporal

“Not only should we have strong spiritual homes, but we should have strong temporal homes.  We should avoid bondage by getting out of debt as soon as we can, pay as we go, and live within our means.  There is wisdom in having on hand a year’s supply of food, clothing, fuel (if possible), and in being prepared to defend our families and our possessions and to take care of ourselves.  I believe a man should prepare for the worst while working for the best.  Some people prepare and don’t work, while others work but don’t prepare.  Both are needed if we would be of maximum service to our God, our family, and our country.”  - Pres. Benson

Food Co-ops

From a WONDERFUL ward member: Thank you!!!
I was just thinking here are two more links you could put on the ward prepardness blog.  The first is a co-op through Crossroads Urban Center.  They have a pick up once a month down at the food bank, so it's really close. It is not donated food, so it's a little deceiving when people see the address as the food bank. They list their produce suppliers on their web site.  I like that they buy as much local in Utah as they can, bread comes from Stone Ground in Salt Lake, Nutty Guys has assortment packs every month, etc.  https://foodco-op.net/

A more frequent place for produce is: http://www.bountifulbaskets.org/
Right now the demand is extremely high in Utah with Bountiful Baskets and we need more locations, so you have to order on Mondays to make sure you can get a basket. They just opened a site at the Food and Care coalition this week, but it still went pretty quickly. They are looking for more locations.

My Note:  Bountiful Baskets is a wonderful way to get fresh produce at a very low price.  We have several ward members who do it and....who really like it.  It's also posted on the Sunday program each week!

Thanks for any of you who read this and......are preparing!  Bless you for that!!!  You're dear to my heart!!!!

Utah Valley SUPER Preparedness FAIR June 3-4

This fair will kick off around 12:00 AM and end about 9:00 PM Friday June 3. It will continue Saturday morning around 9:00 AM till approximately 9:00 PM. Free Food 2 Go is sponsoring the largest Preparedness Fair “ever held in Utah” at the Orem, UT Valley University Events Center (UVU).

So far there are 12 quest speakers and the number is rapidly growing, including Roger K Young, with booths, lectures, demonstrations, samples, etc. on every imaginable preparedness topic. To help recover the cost for the meeting center there will be a small entrance free. I am working closely with the fair sponsor to obtain discount tickets at a bulk price. If you are “interested and committed to go” please let me know ASAP so I can order your tickets at a discount rate. The door price will be $7.50 and I am “hoping” to get a bundle of discount tickets for my people at $4.00 each or no more than $6.00 apiece.

As soon as I get a copy of the Preparedness Fair schedule with all the seminar speakers I will e-mail it to everybody on my e-mail list. If you’re not already on my e-mail list please send a request so I can add you to it at miracle2ofutah@hotmail.com .

Please contact Bob Vance for more info at 801-489-3471 or Verizon 801-358-6682.
After viewing this - I hope all of us have more of a desire to become temporally prepared and more spiritually in tune. If things like this were to happen here we could be caught unprepared.

These are the most graphic pictures of the Japan tsunami yet.  I was expecting to see water flowing in, instead it shows a mass of building flowing in.

How to feed a BABY during times of Crisis:

If a nursing mother becomes sick or injured during a crisis situation, this information on how to feed an infant from our basic food supply may prove to be very useful;  or, if a family runs out of formula during an emergency situation.

Our basic food supply of unprocessed foods, whole grains and beans, would not be suitable for the very young.  They need foods that are more concentrated and less rough.  To make a formula adequate for a 24-hour period, you will need to make this recipe three times.

Baby Formula:
This formula can be prepared for the whole day in cool weather or when a refrigerator is available.  In warm or hot weather, or under unsanitary conditions, it is safer to make a formula 3 times a day.  To do so, add 1/3 cup plus 2 teaspoons of  instant non-fat milk powder to 1-1/3 cups (2/3 pint) of boiled (safe) water, and stir thoroughly.  Then add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 2 teaspoons of sugar, and stir.  If regular dry  milk powder is used, ¼ cup is enough when making one-third of the daily formula, 3 times a day.  If baby bottles are not at hand, milk can be spoon-fed to an infant.

See:  http://www.foodstoragenow.blogspot.com/ for more information. (these are a group of preparedness friends in Cache Valley - so...we can't really order through them. But, could do our own if any of you are interested.)  So far, no one seems to be.  :)  But, I'll keep posting.  :)

How to Hard Boil EGGS

1. Place eggs in a saucepan with enough COLD tap water to cover completely by 1 inch. Bring to a ROLLING boil over HIGH heat. Once the water is brought to a rolling boil, PROMPTLY reduce heat to a lower medium boil and cook an additional 10 minutes for a “hard boiled” egg. For a “soft boiled” egg reduce the time by a few minutes.

Go to the Lord for Help with BALANCE

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, spoke on a number of topics to nearly 10,000 women and priesthood leaders in southeastern Idaho in February 2011. The following is some of what she taught about finding balance.
“The Lord says, ‘Do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy’ (2 Nephi 9:51). So much of the time we spend our efforts on are things that are of no worth and cannot satisfy. We neglect the weightier things the Lord has asked us to take care of, and we think that busyness and competition are better than consecration and personal best efforts. …
“When we make covenants, we promise that everything belongs to the Lord—our time, our abilities, everything we have is His. That means we have to go to Him to know how to balance all that.”

"... the purpose of Relief Society as established by the Lord is to organize, teach, and inspire His daughters to prepare them for the blessings of eternal life.
To fulfill this purpose of Relief Society, the Lord has commissioned each sister and the organization as a whole to:
  1. Increase in faith and personal righteousness.
  2. Strengthen families and homes.

Book of Life

"The Book of Life is the record of the acts of man as such record is written in their own body.  It is the record engraven in the very bones, sinews, and flesh of the mortal body.  That is, every thought, word and deed has an effect on the human body.  All these leae their marks, marks which can be read by Him who is Eternal as easily as the words in a book can be read."  See: Mormon Doctrine "Book of Life"

Love - The Center of All We Do

"Because love is the great commandment, it ought to be at the center of all and everything we do in our own family, in our Church callings, and in our livelihood. Love is the healing balm that repairs rifts in personal and family relationships. It is the bond that unites families, communities, and nations. Love is the power that initiates friendship, tolerance, civility, and respect. It is the source that overcomes divisiveness and hate. Love is the fire that warms our lives with unparalleled joy and divine hope. Love should be our walk and our talk.

When we truly understand what it means to love as Jesus Christ loves us, the confusion clears and our priorities align. Our walk as disciples of Christ becomes more joyful. Our lives take on new meaning. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father becomes more profound. Obedience becomes a joy rather than a burden." - The Love of God, President Uchtdorf, 2009

Email me at yulebean@gmail.com if you'd like to be added to the class list.

Matthew 24

Matthew 24:
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of awars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15 When ye therefore shall see the aabomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16 Then let them which be in Jud├Ža flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

President Hinckey; on the days in which we live

Earth will be cleansed.  Indescribable distress.  Not alarmist.  "I am optimistic."  We must do the Lord's work.  Tithing = The Lord's law of Finance.  He that is tithed shall not be burned at His coming.  The conflict began with the war in Heaven.  Forces of Evil against Good.  There is life beyond this as surely as there if life here. We must do our duty, whatever that duty might be.  Peace may be denied for a season.  Some of liberties may be curtailed.  We may be inconvenienced.  We may even be called on to suffer in one way or another.  But God our Eternal Father will watch over this nation and all the civilized world who look to Him.  He has declared "Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord".  Our safety lies in Repentance.  Our strength comes of obedience to the Commandments of God.  Let us be Prayerful.  Let us Stand Firm against Evil.  Let us Live Worthy of the Blessings of Heaven - reforming our lives where necessary and looking to Him; the Father of us all.  He has said "Be Still and Know that I am God".  These are perilous times. We can have peace in our hearts and homes.  May we look to Him with unfailing faith.  May we worthily place our reliance on His beloved Son, who is our Great Redeemer - whether it be in life or in death.

Learning from Conference

Do you want to make the messages and spirit of general conference a regular part of your life? Read how these members are doing it. --  In his closing remarks at the 177th Annual General Conference in April 2007, President Gordon B. Hinckley told members of the Church: “We hope that you will use the May edition of the Church magazines as a text for your family home evenings, to review that which has been spoken in this conference. What has been said by each of the speakers represents his or her prayerful attempt to impart knowledge that will inspire and cause all who have heard it to stand a little taller and be a little better”.  Here, members share how they have implemented that counsel and found additional ways to learn from general conferenceRead more HERE:

God Reveals Truth to His Prophets and to Us

"God Reveals Truth to His Prophets and to Us", Ensign, March 2011

A prophet is a special witness for Jesus Christ and testifies of His divinity. God calls a prophet to be His representative on earth. A prophet teaches truth, interprets the word of God, and otherwise follows God’s directions in blessing our lives. When a prophet speaks for God, it is as if God is speaking (see D&C 1:38). Prophets are on the earth today just as they were anciently.

Revelation for the whole Church comes through the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Thomas S. Monson. He is a prophet of God. When members of the Church speak of “the prophet,” they are referring to the President of the Church. However, there are other prophets on the earth today. President Monson’s two counselors, President Henry B. Eyring and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, are also prophets. Twelve other men—the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles—are also called as prophets.

Come, Listen to a Prophet's Voice

Come, Listen to a Prophet's Voice - Virginia U. Jensen

"If we listen to the voice of the Lord through His living prophet and follow his counsel, we will never go astray."
"Do we fully appreciate what a wondrous blessing it is to each one of us that we have found our prophet? The ways in which our lives have been enriched by listening to our prophet’s voice are numerous. We have a clearer picture of who we are and what we mean to our Father in Heaven. We have received commandments and counsel to guide us, reminders to keep us on the straight and narrow, and encouraging words to spur us on when we become disheartened or discouraged. If we listen to the voices of the world, we will be misled. But if we listen to the voice of the Lord through His living prophet and follow his counsel, we will never go astray."

When the Prophet Speaks - the debate is over

Recently, at the Churchwide fireside meeting held for the women of the Church, Young Women President Elaine Cannon made the following statement:

“When the Prophet speaks, … the debate is over” (Ensign, Nov. 1978, p. 108).

I was impressed by that simple statement, which carries such deep spiritual meaning for all of us. Wherever I go, my message to the people is: Follow the prophet. Why else has the Lord placed prophets on the earth throughout the dispensations of time? In his infinite wisdom, and as part of the plan of life and salvation for his children, God has given us the blueprint to follow, the leadership to direct us and keep us on course, and the Church organization to help us lay the foundation and develop the skills, or make the preparation necessary, to lead us back to our eternal home.  Read more HERE:

Worldly Fashions -- Modesty

Let Him Do It with Simplicity  - Elder L. Tom Perry
"...requires the wearing of simple and modest clothing. Our dress and grooming send a message to others about who we are, and they also affect the way we act around others. When we are modestly dressed, we also invite the Spirit of the Lord to be a shield and a protection to us.

"Worldly trends in women’s fashion are always inviting extremes. With their latest styles many fashion designers appear to be trying to make two or three dresses out of the amount of fabric necessary for one. Mostly, they are taking too much off the top and too much off the bottom of women’s clothing, and occasionally they scrimp in the middle too. Men’s fashions are also adopting extreme styles. In my day they would be called sloppy and inappropriate. I believe very casual dress is almost always followed by very casual manners.

"Many of you are trying too hard to be unique in your dress and grooming to attract what the Lord would consider the wrong kind of attention. In the Book of Mormon story of the tree of life, it was the people whose “manner of dress was exceedingly fine” who mocked those who partook of the fruit of the tree. It is sobering to realize that the fashion-conscious mockers in the great and spacious building were responsible for embarrassing many, and those who were ashamed “fell away into forbidden paths and were lost” (1 Nephi 8:27–28)."

Doesn't the Church have enough for all it's members?

Why do we need a year’s supply? Doesn’t the Church have production projects to take care of its members?

The primary purpose of Church production projects is to provide food and nonfood commodities for the bishops’ storehouses, so that when there is a need a bishop or a branch president can draw upon these commodities for the care of the poor and needy and distressed.

The production projects also provide work opportunities where parents can work side by side with their children and with other members of the Church from all walks of life. These are great opportunities for consecrating time and talents, for sharing, and for the growth of brotherhood and sisterhood. Among other things, these projects also serve as usable, working land reserves and help members learn and retain the skills necessary to maintain their independence and self-sufficiency in time of need.  Read more HERE:

Priesthood and Relief Society Responsibilities - Preparedness

"The Melchizedek Priesthood quorum leader can help the head of the household by teaching the principles of welfare—how to love, to give service, to recognize what his stewardship is, to work honestly and diligently for his family and for others, and to consecrate his time and talents to the building up of the kingdom of God. He can train the home teachers on how they can get to know the families and be sensitive to their needs. When a member has special needs, the president can work with the bishop and other quorum members to see that those needs are met in a confidential and loving manner.

"The quorum meeting begins to fill its purpose when it meets the needs of the members. It is there they can be taught how to develop the skills in all areas of personal and family preparedness.

"The Relief Society president gives the same kind of strength and support to the women of the ward as she trains the visiting teachers in the skills of compassionate service, as visits are made to the sisters and their needs are met confidentially with love and sensitivity.

"The sisters are usually more effective in teaching gospel principles. They teach and practice skills of sewing, canning, drying, and other food storage methods. They teach nutrition and physical fitness. They emphasize reading and cultural arts skills. Overall there is a permeating spirit of love and giving, of industry, and serious attention to the skills of homemaking and gospel living.

"So, priesthood and Relief Society, working together, bring the family to a realization that personal and family preparedness is living the gospel."  Elder L. Tom Perry,  The Need to Teach Personal and Family Preparedness, 1981

Stock Market Drop?

One of the nation’s leading economic analysts, Yale University professor Robert Shiller, believes the Japanese earthquake will spark a huge worldwide stock market drop as early as this week. And it looks like he is dead on as the market correction is already underway Tuesday — the Dow was down more than 250 at the opening bell.  Read the Full Story — Here.

Listen and Follow Explicitly

"As we become more affluent and our bank accounts enlarge, there comes a feeling of security, and we feel sometimes that we do not need the supply that has been suggested by the Brethren. … We must remember that conditions could change and a year’s supply of basic commodities could be very much appreciated by us or others. So we would do well to listen to what we have been told and to follow it explicitly."   - Spencer W. Kimball

Housebill 477

Current debate about Housebill 477 -
"Most notably, it exempts state lawmakers from having to disclose their e-mail correspondence with each other or their staffs and eliminates statutory language that says government records are presumed to be public and that the burden is on the government to show why records should not be released.

Keep From Starving in Case of Emergency

“The counsel to have a year's supply of basic food, clothing, and commodities was given fifty years ago and has been repeated many times since. Every father and mother are the family's store keepers. They should store whatever their own family would like to have in the case of an emergency...store a year's supply...that might keep us from starving in case of emergency.”   - James E. Faust (General Conference, April 1986)

More Salvation in Wheat

For over 100 years we have been admonished to store up grain.  "Remember the counsel that is given," said Elder Orson Hyde, "...Store up all your grain,' and take care of it!  Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p.17.  And he also said: "There is more salvation and security in wheat, than in all the political schemes of the world....."  JD. vol. 2, p. 207   -  Read more about Elder Orson Hyde

Voice of WARNING; Prepare for the Troubles and Desolations

“I stand before the Church this day and raise the warning voice. It is a prophetic voice, for I shall say only what the apostles and the prophets have spoken concerning our day. ...It is a voice calling upon the Lord's people to prepare for the troubles and desolations which are about to be poured upon the world without measure. For the moment, we live in a day of peace and prosperity but it shall not ever be thus. Great trials lie ahead. All of the sorrows and perils of the past are but a foretaste of what is yet to be. And we must prepare ourselves temporally and spiritually.”    - Bruce R. McConkie (General Conference April 1979)
